Capping and Closure of a Mine, Jasper County, Missouri
DeNovo Constructors was recently awarded a project involving the capping and closure of a former mining belt site. This site is located on one of the largest zinc-lead mining areas in the world. Because the wastes are associated with heavy metals contamination, the EPA has placed this site on the National Priorities List. DeNovo is performing the excavation, mine tailings consolidation as well as contaminated stream sediments at this site. In addition, source material and sediments found in mine pits will be excavated and properly disposed. Selected mine shafts will be permanently plugged and sealed with all surface water being diverted from mine these openings to ensure that contaminated surface waters don’t run-off into them. DeNovo will install a monitoring program to assess the effect of the cleanup on the site streams. DeNovo is implementing a safety plan and community relations plan to ensure all appropriate actions are taken in the best interest of its client, regulatory agencies and their oversight personnel and the surrounding community.
